چکیده
Antibacterial and phytochemical screening of methanolic, sequential extracts (hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol) and alkaloid rich fractions of Tabernaemontana stapfiana Britten was carried out. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, coumarins, tannins and saponins that have been associated with antimicrobial activity. The stem and root bark methanolic extracts showed good activity against the bacterial strains used including the multiple drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 15.6 to 500 microg/ml and minimum bactericidal concentrations ranging from 31.25 to 500 microg/ml. The sequential extracts of the root and stem bark had high antimicrobial activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging between 3.9 and 250 microg/ml and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) ranging between 7.8 and 500 microg/ml against the tested microorganisms. The dichloromethane extract of the alkaloid rich fractions however exhibited reduced antibacterial activities as compared to methanol and sequential extracts but the dichloromethane:methanol (4:1) mixture showed high activity with MICs ranging between 15.6 and 250 microg/ml. These antibacterial efficacy studies suggest that Tabernaemontana stapfiana Britten could be a source of antibacterial agents.

Antibacterial activity of medicinal herbs against the fish pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila
Antibiotics play an important role in the disease management of aquaculture practices; however antibiotic resistance develops readily in pathogens following antibiotic treatment. Medicinal herbs play an alternative role to tackle this problem. In the present study, 15 selected plant species belonging to Lamiaceae and Apocynaceae were collected from different localities of Tirunelveli district o...
متن کاملIsolation of bis-indole alkaloids with antileishmanial and antibacterial activities from Peschiera van heurkii (syn. Tabernaemontana van heurkii).
Extracts from leaves and stem bark of Peschiera van heurkii (Muell. Arg.) L. Allorge (syn. Tabernaemontana van heurkii Muell. Arg., Apocynaceae) have been assayed for antileishmanial and antibacterial activities. The activities were concentrated in the alkaloid fractions which yielded 20 indole and bisindole alkaloids. The strongest leishmanicidal and antibacterial activities were observed with...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Plant species used by Venda people of South Africa in the treatment of malaria and associated symptoms were evaluated for their antiplasmodial efficacy as well as cytotoxic properties and some showed significant activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS In vitro antiplasmodial activity and cytotoxic properties were evaluated on 20 indigenous plant species. Ground plant ma...
متن کاملApplication of preparative high-speed counter-current chromatography for the separation of two alkaloids from the roots of Tabernaemontana catharinensis (Apocynaceae).
The methanolic extract of Tabernaemontana catharinensis (Apocynaceae) roots, which contains alkaloids with several biological activities, was separated on a preparative scale using high-speed counter-current chromatography. The optimum solvent system was found to be a mixture of CHCl(3)-MeOH-H(2)O [5:10:6 (v/v/v)] and led to a successful separation of two monoterpenic indole alkaloids, voachalo...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Bacterial infections remain a significant threat to human health. Due to the emergence of widespread antibiotic resistance, development of novel antibiotics is required in order to ensure that effective treatment remains available. There are several reports on the ethnomedical use of Tabernaemontana elegans pertaining to antibacterial activity. AIM OF THE STUDY ...
